Get Out! Go Wild! is like a buffet table laden with all sorts of inviting tidbits. It’s served with stories about fishing, nature and the environment. There are pig, deer, goat and helicopter hunting yarns. Poems, drawings, funnies, comics and interesting factual ‘Did you know?’ information on things such as moose, bass, and the korotangi – the crying dove.

And like dessert, some have been dished up by other writers. Sleeping Dolphins, a magical story from the Marlborough Sounds, is one of them.

Jed Jelly and the Jelly Gang is about a jellyfish that constantly asks, “Why, oh, why does everything want to eat us jellies up?” In another story Tangaroa, the Māori god of the sea, is annoyed by Jacko’s greed when he goes floundering. There are even two firefighting stories featuring one of the world's largest helicopters.

POW is a true story that approaches the title of the book from a different outlook. It tells of a young man who was taken prisoner by the Germans during WW11. At the end of the war, the Dutch government encouraged all of its young people to leave their damaged country and seek a new life in a country that offered them better prospects. So the POW did just that – he got out, went wild and built a new life in New Zealand/Aotearoa!

There are foraging recipes like watercress salad and one using kawakawa leaves. There’s even a list of plants that can be used as toilet paper if you get caught short in the native forest or anywhere on the farm, but try not to make it a habit!

Like in the previous books Cor Blimey Mate, Blow Your Socks Off and Grab ya Boots, there’s a comic story that’s sure to tickle you under the arm, or maybe scratch your head!

The stories vary in age; some are a little younger, while others are older, appropriate for children aged nine to twelve. There will be favourites, but regardless of which you choose, you can be certain that, like in some of your buffet dishes, having a bit of chill(i) will definitely flare up the stories about close misses and danger.

This book is for kids who want to spend time outside, learn new things and have an adventure.

So come on!

Wellington City Libraries has chosen Pakupaku Pīwakawaka to have its pages transformed into billboards for a nature trail in one of Wellington's central parks. WCL works with the city's Parks, Sports, and Recreation staff on a project called Te Ara Pukapuka (Book Pathways). The billboards will be placed throughout nature trails and reserve pathways in Wellington for tamariki and their whānau to discover while exploring the region.
